Sony WH-1000XM5: eBay vs Amazon price

About the Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony released the WH-1000XM5 in May 2022. It uses two processors and eight microphones for noise canceling, runs about 30 hours on a charge with ANC on, and is lighter and sleeker than the XM4 it followed. One trade-off is the hinge: the earcups swivel flat but no longer fold inward, so the case is bulkier.

The WH-1000XM6 arrived in 2025, and the XM5 has been discounted regularly ever since. Used and refurbished pairs on eBay are easy to find, many from travelers who upgraded. Over-ear headphones age mostly through their ear pads and battery, so a used pair with fresh pads can be a better buy than the price suggests.

Where the savings are

New XM5 sale prices on Amazon have often been low enough to make a used pair a hard sell, so check that first. If you go used, refurbished units with a warranty are the safer option. Worn ear pads and a peeling headband lower resale value, though replacement pads are easy to find. Battery life well under 20 hours is a sign of a tired pair.
