Is Refurbished Worth It? Amazon Renewed vs eBay Refurbished

By Aytozon Team ·

Refurbished is worth it for most people buying phones, laptops, tablets and headphones, as long as you buy through a program with a written guarantee and you pick the condition tier carefully. You typically save a meaningful amount over new, and you get far more protection than a plain used listing gives you.

Between the two big programs, eBay Refurbished usually offers the longer warranty, and Amazon Renewed spells out a battery minimum. The right choice depends on which of those you care about more and on the price difference that day.

What “refurbished” means on each site

On both sites, refurbished means a pre-owned or returned device that was inspected, tested and cleaned before being listed again. Apart from eBay’s Certified tier, which comes from the brand or an authorized seller, the work is done by independent refurbishers and sellers.

Amazon Renewed products come from Amazon-qualified sellers and suppliers. Amazon says each product is professionally inspected and tested to work and look like new, and every Renewed listing is backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee.

eBay Refurbished is a program inside eBay’s broader marketplace. Listings in it are sold either by the brand itself or an authorized reseller, or by sellers eBay has vetted for quality. Each listing carries a condition tier and a warranty serviced by Allstate.

Regular “used” or “seller refurbished” listings outside these programs don’t carry the same promises. If the listing doesn’t show the program badge and its guarantee, treat it as used. Our guide to buying used electronics on eBay covers how to vet those.

Condition grades compared

Amazon Renewed uses four grades. Premium and Excellent both mean no screen scratches and no visible body damage when held about 12 inches away. Good allows light body scratches that are barely visible at that distance and can’t be felt. Acceptable allows a few shallow screen scratches that don’t show when the screen is on, light body scratches you can see at 12 inches, and up to three minor dents. All four grades are supposed to be fully functional.

eBay Refurbished also uses four tiers. Certified is like new and comes directly from the brand or an authorized seller. Excellent is like new with no visible wear. Very Good shows minimal wear. Good shows moderate wear.

The names overlap in confusing ways. Amazon’s “Good” and eBay’s “Good” aren’t the same standard, so read each program’s definition before you compare prices. For a phone you’ll keep in a case, a lower cosmetic grade can be a smart way to save. For a laptop you’ll look at all day, or a gift, paying up for the top tier usually makes sense.

Warranties, guarantees and return windows

Amazon Renewed listings come with a return window that Amazon has described as 90 days from receipt, for a replacement or refund if the product doesn’t work as expected. Renewed Premium extends that to a one-year guarantee. Terms can vary by listing, so check the guarantee line on the product page before you buy.

eBay Refurbished splits it differently. Certified listings carry a two-year warranty, and Excellent, Very Good and Good listings carry a one-year warranty. The program also advertises free 30-day returns, with some exceptions. On top of that, purchases are still covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee if an item arrives broken or not as described.

Amazon Renewed eBay Refurbished
Condition tiers Premium, Excellent, Good, Acceptable Certified, Excellent, Very Good, Good
Who sells Amazon-qualified sellers and suppliers Brands, authorized resellers, vetted sellers
Coverage 90-day guarantee; one year on Premium 2-year warranty on Certified; 1 year on other tiers
Returns Covered within the guarantee period Free 30-day returns, with exceptions
Battery minimum At least 80%; at least 90% on Premium No published program-wide minimum

The eBay warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. It doesn’t cover cosmetic damage, normal wear, damage from drops or spills, or unauthorized repairs. Neither program is accidental damage coverage, so a cracked screen after you drop it is on you.

Battery health

Battery wear is the biggest hidden cost in a used phone or laptop, and it’s the main reason some people avoid refurbished devices entirely.

Amazon addresses it directly. Renewed batteries are tested to hold at least 80% of the capacity of a new battery at the time of sale, and Renewed Premium raises that to at least 90%. That’s a concrete number you can check the moment the device arrives.

eBay Refurbished doesn’t publish a single battery threshold across the program. Many sellers list battery health in the description or show it in photos. If a listing doesn’t state battery health, ask the seller before buying.

An 80% battery in a phone means noticeably shorter days than when it was new. If you’re a heavy user, either pay for a higher tier, look for a listing with a stated health above 90%, or budget for a battery replacement down the road. On iPhones and many Android phones, battery health is in the settings menu.

How much you save

Savings depend on the product and how long it’s been out. Recent flagship phones and premium laptops show the biggest dollar gaps, because new prices stay high while refurbished supply grows. Budget products show smaller savings, and sometimes a new unit on sale costs about the same as a refurbished one.

That’s why it’s worth checking new and refurbished together. Our side-by-side search puts Amazon’s new price next to eBay’s refurbished and used listings, and the new vs used calculator shows the real difference after shipping. Our phones and headphones pages are where the refurbished discounts tend to be largest.

Who should buy refurbished

Refurbished makes the most sense if you want a recent device without paying launch prices, you’re replacing a broken phone and don’t need the newest model, or you’re buying a second device such as a kid’s tablet or a backup laptop. It’s also a good fit for gaming hardware. A refurbished console from our consoles page plays the same games as a new one.

It makes less sense when the new price is already low because of a sale, or when you want accidental damage coverage from day one, since neither program’s standard coverage includes it. If you care a lot about cosmetics and the only refurbished units available are the lowest grade, a new unit may be the better buy.

How we’d choose between them

Start with price for the same model, storage and lock status in comparable condition. If the gap is small, let the coverage decide.

For a phone where battery life matters, Amazon Renewed Premium gives you the 90% battery floor and a full year of coverage. For a laptop or tablet where you’d like the longest protection against a hardware defect, eBay Refurbished Certified with its two-year warranty is hard to beat, when you can find one in stock. For everything in between, the one-year eBay tiers usually beat Amazon’s standard Renewed on coverage length, while Amazon’s battery minimum gives you more certainty on that one component.

Tip: Once a refurbished device arrives, check battery health, test every port and button, and do a full reset in the first few days. Problems are easiest to resolve while you’re still well inside the return window.
